16 But all Israel H3478 and Judah H3063 loved H157 David, H1732 because he went out H3318 and came in H935 before H6440 them.
And David H1732 went out H3318 whithersoever Saul H7586 sent H7971 him, and behaved himself wisely: H7919 and Saul H7586 set H7760 him over the men H582 of war, H4421 and he was accepted H3190 in the sight H5869 of all the people, H5971 and also in the sight H5869 of Saul's H7586 servants. H5650
Which may go out H3318 before H6440 them, and which may go in H935 before H6440 them, and which may lead them out, H3318 and which may bring them in; H935 that the congregation H5712 of the LORD H3068 be not as sheep H6629 which have no shepherd. H7462
Also in time past, H865 H8032 when Saul H7586 was king H4428 over us, thou wast he that leddest out H3318 and broughtest in H935 Israel: H3478 and the LORD H3068 said H559 to thee, Thou shalt feed H7462 my people H5971 Israel, H3478 and thou shalt be a captain H5057 over Israel. H3478
And now, O LORD H3068 my God, H430 thou hast made thy servant H5650 king H4427 instead of David H1732 my father: H1 and I am but a little H6996 child: H5288 I know H3045 not how to go out H3318 or come in. H935
And G2532 could G2147 not G3756 find G2147 what G5101 they might do: G4160 for G1063 all G537 the people G2992 were very attentive G1582 to hear G191 him. G846
And G2532 the chief priests G749 and G2532 the scribes G1122 the same G1722 G846 hour G5610 sought G2212 to lay G1911 hands G5495 on G1909 him; G846 and G2532 they feared G5399 the people: G2992 for G1063 they perceived G1097 that G3754 he had spoken G2036 this G5026 parable G3850 against G4314 them. Commentary on 1 Samuel 18 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 18
In the course of the foregoing chapter we left David in triumph; now in this chapter we have,
1Sa 18:1-5
David was anointed to the crown to take it out of Saul's hand, and over Jonathan's head, and yet here we find,
1Sa 18:6-11
Now begin David's troubles, and they not only tread on the heels of his triumphs, but take rise from them, such is the vanity of that in this world which seems greatest.
1Sa 18:12-30
Saul had now, in effect, proclaimed war with David. He began in open hostility when he threw the javelin at him. Now we are here told how his enmity proceeded, and how David received the attacks of it.
