2 And he said H559 unto him, God forbid; H2486 thou shalt not die: H4191 behold, my father H1 will do H6213 H6213 nothing H1697 either great H1419 or small, H6996 but that he will shew H1540 H241 it me: and why should my father H1 hide H5641 this thing H1697 from me? it is not so.
And they said H559 unto him, Wherefore saith H1696 my lord H113 these words? H1697 God forbid H2486 that thy servants H5650 should do H6213 according to this thing: H1697
God forbid H2486 that we should rebel H4775 against the LORD, H3068 and turn H7725 this day H3117 from following H310 the LORD, H3068 to build H1129 an altar H4196 for burnt offerings, H5930 for meat offerings, H4503 or for sacrifices, H2077 beside the altar H4196 of the LORD H3068 our God H430 that is before H6440 his tabernacle. H4908
Now the LORD H3068 had told H1540 Samuel H8050 in his ear H241 a H259 day H3117 before H6440 Saul H7586 came, H935 saying, H559
And the people H5971 said H559 unto Saul, H7586 Shall Jonathan H3129 die, H4191 who hath wrought H6213 this great H1419 salvation H3444 in Israel? H3478 God forbid: H2486 as the LORD H3068 liveth, H2416 there shall not one hair H8185 of his head H7218 fall H5307 to the ground; H776 for he hath wrought H6213 with God H430 this day. H3117 So the people H5971 rescued H6299 Jonathan, H3129 that he died H4191 not.
And Jonathan H3083 said H559 unto David, H1732 O LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel, H3478 when I have sounded H2713 my father H1 about to morrow H4279 any time, H6256 or the third H7992 day, and, behold, if there be good H2895 toward David, H1732 and I then send H7971 not unto thee, and shew H1540 H241 it thee;
Sacrifice H2077 and offering H4503 thou didst not desire; H2654 mine ears H241 hast thou opened: H3738 burnt offering H5930 and sin offering H2401 hast thou not required. H7592
Henceforth G3765 I call G3004 you G5209 not G3765 servants; G1401 for G3754 the servant G1401 knoweth G1492 not G3756 what G5101 his G846 lord G2962 doeth: G4160 but G1161 I have called G2046 you G5209 friends; G5384 for G3754 all things G3956 that G3739 I have heard G191 of G3844 my G3450 Father G3962 I have made known G1107 unto you. G5213
For G3754 I have given G1325 unto them G846 the words G4487 which G3739 thou gavest G1325 me; G3427 and G2532 they G846 have received G2983 them, and G2532 have known G1097 surely G230 that G3754 I came out G1831 from G3844 thee, G4675 and G2532 they have believed G4100 that G3754 thou G4771 didst send G649 me. Commentary on 1 Samuel 20 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 20
David, having several times narrowly escaped Saul's fury, begins to consider at last whether it may not be necessary for him to retire into the country and to take up arms in his own defence. But he will not do so daring a thing without consulting his faithful friend Jonathan; how he did this, and what passed between them, we have an account in this chapter, where we have as surprising instances of supernatural love as we had in the chapter before of unnatural hatred.

Jonathan is here effectually convinced of that which he was so loth to believe, that his father had an implacable enmity to David, and would certainly be the death of him if it were in his power; and he had like to have paid very dearly himself for the conviction.
