22 So G1161 he sent G649 into G1519 Macedonia G3109 two G1417 of them that ministered G1247 unto him, G846 Timotheus G5095 and G2532 Erastus; G2037 but he himself G846 stayed G1907 in G1519 Asia G773 for a season. G5550
Gaius G1050 mine G3450 host, G3581 and G2532 of the whole G3650 church, G1577 saluteth G782 you. G5209 Erastus G2037 the chamberlain G3623 of the city G4172 saluteth G782 you, G5209 and G2532 Quartus G2890 a brother. G80
Then G1161 came he G2658 to G1519 Derbe G1191 and G2532 Lystra: G3082 and, G2532 behold, G2400 a certain G5100 disciple G3101 was G2258 there, G1563 named G3686 Timotheus, G5095 the son G5207 of a certain G5100 woman, G1135 which was a Jewess, G2453 and believed; G4103 but G1161 his father G3962 was a Greek: G1672
Him G5126 would G2309 Paul G3972 have to go forth G1831 with G4862 him; G846 and G2532 took G2983 and circumcised G4059 him G846 because G1223 of the Jews G2453 which G3588 were G5607 in G1722 those G1565 quarters: G5117 for G1063 they knew G1492 all G537 that G3754 his G846 father G3962 was G5225 a Greek. G1672
And G2532 a vision G3705 appeared G3700 to Paul G3972 in G1223 the night; G3571 There stood G2258 G2476 a man G5100 G435 of Macedonia, G3110 and prayed G3870 him, G846 G2532 saying, G3004 Come over G1224 into G1519 Macedonia, G3109 and help G997 us. G2254 And G1161 after G5613 he had seen G1492 the vision, G3705 immediately G2112 we endeavoured G2212 to go G1831 into G1519 Macedonia, G3109 assuredly gathering G4822 that G3754 the Lord G2962 had called G4341 us G2248 for to preach the gospel G2097 unto them. G846
And G1161 when G5613 G5037 Silas G4609 and G2532 Timotheus G5095 were come G2718 from G575 Macedonia, G3109 Paul G3972 was pressed G4912 in the spirit, G4151 and testified G1263 to the Jews G2453 that Jesus G2424 was Christ. G5547
And G1161 this G5124 continued G1096 by the space G1909 of two G1417 years; G2094 so G5620 that all G3956 they which dwelt in G2730 Asia G773 heard G191 the word G3056 of the Lord G2962 Jesus, G2424 both G5037 Jews G2453 and G2532 Greeks. G1672
And G1161 after G3326 the uproar G2351 was ceased, G3973 Paul G3972 called G4341 unto him the disciples, G3101 and G2532 embraced G782 them, and departed G1831 for to go G4198 into G1519 Macedonia. G3109
For G1063 from G575 you G5216 sounded out G1837 the word G3056 of the Lord G2962 not G3756 only G3440 in G1722 Macedonia G3109 and G2532 Achaia, G882 but G235 also G2532 in G1722 every G3956 place G5117 your G5216 faith G4102 to G4314 God-ward G2316 is spread abroad; G1831 so G5620 that we G2248 need G5532 not G3361 G2192 to speak G2980 any thing. Commentary on Acts 19 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 19
We left Paul in his circuit visiting the churches (ch. 18:23), but we have not forgotten, nor has he, the promise he made to his friends at Ephesus, to return to them, and make some stay there; now this chapter shows us his performance of that promise, his coming to Ephesus, and his continuance there two years; we are here told,
Act 19:1-7
Ephesus was a city of great note in Asia, famous for a temple built there to Diana, which was one of the wonders of the world: thither Paul came to preach the gospel while Apollos was at Corinth (v. 1); while he was watering there, Paul was planting here, and grudged not that Apollos entered into his labours and was building upon his foundation, but rejoiced in it, and went on in the new work that was cut out for him at Ephesus with the more cheerfulness and satisfaction, because he knew that such an able minister of the New Testament as Apollos was now at Corinth, carrying on the good work there. Though there were those that made him the head of a party against Paul (1 Co. 1:12), yet Paul had no jealousy of him, nor any way disliked the affection the people had for him. Paul having gone through the country of Galatia and Phrygia, having passed through the upper coasts, Pontus and Bithynia, that lay north, at length came to Ephesus, where he had left Aquila and Priscilla, and there found them. At his first coming, he met with some disciples there, who professed faith in Christ as the true Messiah, but were as yet in the first and lowest form in the school of Christ, under his usher John the Baptist. They were in number about twelve (v. 7); they were much of the standing that Apollos was of when he came to Ephesus (for he knew only the baptism of John, ch. 18:25), but they had not opportunity of being acquainted with Aquila and Priscilla, or had not been so long in Ephesus or were not so willing to receive instruction as Apollos was, otherwise they might have had the way of God expounded to them more perfectly, as Apollos had. Observe here,
Act 19:8-12
Paul is here very busy at Ephesus to do good.
Act 19:13-20
The preachers of the gospel were sent forth to carry on a war against Satan, and therein Christ went forth conquering and to conquer. The casting of evil spirits out of those that were possessed was one instance of Christ's victory over Satan; but, to show in how many ways Christ triumphed over that great enemy, we have here in these verses two remarkable instances of the conquest of Satan, not only in those that were violently possessed by him, but in those that were voluntarily devoted to him.
