8 Go up H5927 to the mountain, H2022 and bring H935 wood, H6086 and build H1129 the house; H1004 and I will take pleasure H7521 in it, and I will be glorified, H3513 saith H559 the LORD. H3068
For the LORD H3068 hath chosen H977 Zion; H6726 he hath desired H183 it for his habitation. H4186 This is my rest H4496 for ever: H5703 here will I dwell; H3427 for I have desired H183 it.
Therefore, G3767 when G3753 he was gone out, G1831 Jesus G2424 said, G3004 Now G3568 is G1392 the Son G5207 of man G444 glorified, G1392 and G2532 God G2316 is glorified G1392 in G1722 him. G846 If G1487 God G2316 be glorified G1392 in G1722 him, G846 God G2316 shall G1392 also G2532 glorify G1392 him G846 in G1722 himself, G1438 and G2532 shall G1392 straightway G2117 glorify G1392 him. G846
Bring forth G4160 therefore G3767 fruits G2590 meet G514 for repentance: G3341 And G2532 think G1380 not G3361 to say G3004 within G1722 yourselves, G1438 We have G2192 Abraham G11 to our father: G3962 for G1063 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 that G3754 God G2316 is able G1410 of G1537 these G5130 stones G3037 to raise up G1453 children G5043 unto Abraham. G11
Open H6605 thy doors, H1817 O Lebanon, H3844 that the fire H784 may devour H398 thy cedars. H730 Howl, H3213 fir tree; H1265 for the cedar H730 is fallen; H5307 because the mighty H117 are spoiled: H7703 howl, H3213 O ye oaks H437 of Bashan; H1316 for the forest H3293 of the vintage H1208 H1219 is come down. H3381
Thus speaketh H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts, H6635 saying, H559 This people H5971 say, H559 The time H6256 is not come, H935 the time H6256 that the LORD'S H3068 house H1004 should be built. H1129 Then came the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 by H3027 Haggai H2292 the prophet, H5030 saying, H559 Is it time H6256 for you, O ye, to dwell H3427 in your cieled H5603 houses, H1004 and this house H1004 lie waste? H2720
The LORD H3068 loveth H157 the gates H8179 of Zion H6726 more than all the dwellings H4908 of Jacob. H3290 Glorious things H3513 are spoken H1696 of thee, O city H5892 of God. H430 Selah. H5542
Send H7971 me also cedar H730 trees, H6086 fir trees, H1265 and algum trees, H418 out of Lebanon: H3844 for I know H3045 that thy servants H5650 can skill H3045 to cut H3772 timber H6086 in Lebanon; H3844 and, behold, my servants H5650 shall be with thy servants, H5650 Even to prepare H3559 me timber H6086 in abundance: H7230 for the house H1004 which I am about to build H1129 shall be wonderful H6381 great. H1419 And, behold, I will give H5414 to thy servants, H5650 the hewers H2404 that cut H3772 timber, H6086 twenty H6242 thousand H505 measures H3734 of beaten H4347 wheat, H2406 and twenty H6242 thousand H505 measures H3734 of barley, H8184 and twenty H6242 thousand H505 baths H1324 of wine, H3196 and twenty H6242 thousand H505 baths H1324 of oil. Commentary on Haggai 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
An Exposition, With Practical Observations, of
The Prophecy of Haggai
Chapter 1
In this chapter, after the preamble of the prophecy, we have,
Hag 1:1-11
It was the complaint of the Jews in Babylon that they saw not their signs, and there was no more prophet (Ps. 74:9), which was a just judgment upon them for mocking and misusing the prophets. We read of no prophets they had in their return, as they had in their coming out of Egypt, Hos. 12:13. God stirred them up immediately by his Spirit to exert themselves in that escape (Ezra 1:5); for, though God makes use of prophets, he needs them not, he can do his work without them. But the lamp of Old-Testament prophecy shall yet make some bright and glorious efforts before it expire; and Haggai is the first that appears under the character of a special messenger from heaven, when the word of the Lord had been long precious (as when prophecy began, 1 Sa. 3:1) and there had been no open vision. In the reign of Darius Hystaspes, the third of the Persian kings, in the second year of his reign, this prophet was sent; and the word of the Lord came to him, and came by him to the leading men among the Jews, who are here named, v. 1. The chief governor,

As an ear-ring of gold (says Solomon), and an ornament of fine gold, so amiable, so acceptable, in the sight of God and man, is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear, Prov. 25:12. The prophet here was a wise but faithful reprover, in God's name, and he met with an obedient ear. The foregoing sermon met with the desired success among the people, and their obedience met with due encouragement from God. Observe,
