6 Even men, H1397 and women, H802 and children, H2945 and the king's H4428 daughters, H1323 and every person H5315 that Nebuzaradan H5018 the captain H7227 of the guard H2876 had left H3240 with Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 the son H1121 of Shaphan, H8227 and Jeremiah H3414 the prophet, H5030 and Baruch H1263 the son H1121 of Neriah. H5374
But Nebuzaradan H5018 the captain H7227 of the guard H2876 left H7604 of the poor H1800 of the people, H5971 which had nothing, H3972 in the land H776 of Judah, H3063 and gave H5414 them vineyards H3754 and fields H3010 at the same time. H3117
Now when all the captains H8269 of the forces H2428 which were in the fields, H7704 even they and their men, H582 heard H8085 that the king H4428 of Babylon H894 had made Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 governor H6485 in the land, H776 and had committed H6485 unto him men, H582 and women, H802 and children, H2945 and of the poor H1803 of the land, H776 of them that were not carried away captive H1540 to Babylon; H894
For all this I considered H5414 in my heart H3820 even to declare H952 all this, that the righteous, H6662 and the wise, H2450 and their works, H5652 are in the hand H3027 of God: H430 no man H120 knoweth H3045 either H1571 love H160 or hatred H8135 by all that is before H6440 them. All things come alike to all: there is one H259 event H4745 to the righteous, H6662 and to the wicked; H7563 to the good H2896 and to the clean, H2889 and to the unclean; H2931 to him that sacrificeth, H2076 and to him that H834 sacrificeth H2076 not: as is the good, H2896 so is the sinner; H2398 and he that sweareth, H7650 as he that feareth H3373 an oath. H7621
Then Ishmael H3458 carried away captive H7617 all the residue H7611 of the people H5971 that were in Mizpah, H4709 even the king's H4428 daughters, H1323 and all the people H5971 that remained H7604 in Mizpah, H4709 whom Nebuzaradan H5018 the captain H7227 of the guard H2876 had committed H6485 to Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam: H296 and Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 carried them away captive, H7617 and departed H3212 to go over H5674 to the Ammonites. H1121 H5983
Verily, G281 verily, G281 I say G3004 unto thee, G4671 When G3753 thou wast G2258 young, G3501 thou girdedst G2224 thyself, G4572 and G2532 walkedst G4043 whither G3699 thou wouldest: G2309 but G1161 when G3752 thou shalt be old, G1095 thou shalt stretch forth G1614 thy G4675 hands, G5495 and G2532 another G243 shall gird G2224 thee, G4571 and G2532 carry G5342 thee whither G3699 thou wouldest G2309 not. Commentary on Jeremiah 43 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 43
Jeremiah had faithfully delivered his message from God in the foregoing chapter, and the case was made so very plain by it that one would have thought there needed no more words about it; but we find it quite otherwise. Here is,
Jer 43:1-7
What God said to the builders of Babel may be truly said of this people that Jeremiah is now dealing with: Now nothing will be restrained from them which they have imagined to do, Gen. 11:6. They have a fancy for Egypt, and to Egypt they will go, whatever God himself says to the contrary. Jeremiah made them hear all he had to say, though he saw them uneasy at it; it was what the Lord their God had sent him to speak to them, and they shall have it all. And now let us see what they have to say to it.
Jer 43:8-13
We have here, as also in the next chapter, Jeremiah prophesying in Egypt. Jeremiah was now in Tahpanhes, for there his lords and masters were; he was there among idolatrous Egyptians and treacherous Israelites; but there,
