22 There was none of the Anakims H6062 left H3498 in the land H776 of the children H1121 of Israel: H3478 only in Gaza, H5804 in Gath, H1661 and in Ashdod, H795 there remained. H7604
And there went out H3318 a champion H376 H1143 out of the camp H4264 of the Philistines, H6430 named H8034 Goliath, H1555 of Gath, H1661 whose height H1363 was six H8337 cubits H520 and a span. H2239
From Ekron H6138 even unto the sea, H3220 all that lay near H3027 Ashdod, H795 with their villages: H2691
And the Philistines H6430 took H3947 the ark H727 of God, H430 and brought H935 it from Ebenezer H72 unto Ashdod. H795
And Ishbibenob, H3430 which was of the sons H3211 of the giant, H7497 the weight H4948 of whose spear H7013 weighed three H7969 hundred H3967 shekels of brass H5178 in weight, H4948 he being girded H2296 with a new H2319 sword, thought H559 to have slain H5221 David. H1732 But Abishai H52 the son H1121 of Zeruiah H6870 succoured H5826 him, and smote H5221 the Philistine, H6430 and killed H4191 him. Then the men H582 of David H1732 sware H7650 unto him, saying, H559 Thou shalt go H3318 no more out with us to battle, H4421 that thou quench H3518 not the light H5216 of Israel. H3478 And it came to pass after this, H310 that there was again a battle H4421 with the Philistines H6430 at Gob: H1359 then Sibbechai H5444 the Hushathite H2843 slew H5221 Saph, H5593 which was of the sons H3211 of the giant. H7497 And there was again a battle H4421 in Gob H1359 with the Philistines, H6430 where Elhanan H445 the son H1121 of Jaareoregim, H3296 a Bethlehemite, H1022 slew H5221 the brother of Goliath H1555 the Gittite, H1663 the staff H6086 of whose spear H2595 was like a weaver's H707 beam. H4500 And there was yet a battle H4421 in Gath, H1661 where was a man H376 of great stature, H4067 H4055 that had on every hand H3027 six H8337 fingers, H676 and on every foot H7272 six H8337 toes, H676 four H702 and twenty H6242 in number; H4557 and he also was born H3205 to the giant. H7497 And when he defied H2778 Israel, H3478 Jonathan H3083 the son H1121 of Shimea H8092 the brother H251 of David H1732 slew H5221 him. These four H702 were born H3205 to the giant H7497 in Gath, H1661 and fell H5307 by the hand H3027 of David, H1732 and by the hand H3027 of his servants. H5650
And it came to pass at the end H7093 of three H7969 years, H8141 that two H8147 of the servants H5650 of Shimei H8096 ran away H1272 unto Achish H397 son H1121 of Maachah H4601 king H4428 of Gath. H1661 And they told H5046 Shimei, H8096 saying, H559 Behold, thy servants H5650 be in Gath. H1661
Beriah H1283 also, and Shema, H8087 who H1992 were heads H7218 of the fathers H1 of the inhabitants H3427 of Aijalon, H357 who drove away H1272 the inhabitants H3427 of Gath: H1661
Now after this H310 it came to pass, that David H1732 smote H5221 the Philistines, H6430 and subdued H3665 them, and took H3947 Gath H1661 and her towns H1323 out of the hand H3027 of the Philistines. H6430
Even three H7969 thousand H505 talents H3603 of gold, H2091 of the gold H2091 of Ophir, H211 and seven H7651 thousand H505 talents H3603 of refined H2212 silver, H3701 to overlay H2902 the walls H7023 of the houses H1004 withal: The gold H2091 for things of gold, H2091 and the silver H3701 for things of silver, H3701 and for all manner of work H4399 to be made by the hands H3027 of artificers. H2796 And who then is willing H5068 to consecrate H4390 his service H3027 this day H3117 unto the LORD? H3068 Then the chief H8269 of the fathers H1 and princes H8269 of the tribes H7626 of Israel, H3478 and the captains H8269 of thousands H505 and of hundreds, H3967 with the rulers H8269 of the king's H4428 work, H4399 offered willingly, H5068 And gave H5414 for the service H5656 of the house H1004 of God H430 of gold H2091 five H2568 thousand H505 talents H3603 and ten thousand H7239 drams, H150 and of silver H3701 ten H6235 thousand H505 talents, H3603 and of brass H5178 eighteen H8083 H7239 thousand H505 talents, H3603 and one hundred H3967 thousand H505 talents H3603 of iron. H1270 And they with whom precious stones H68 were found H4672 gave H5414 them to the treasure H214 of the house H1004 of the LORD, H3068 by the hand H3027 of Jehiel H3171 the Gershonite. H1649
And he went forth H3318 and warred H3898 against the Philistines, H6430 and brake down H6555 the wall H2346 of Gath, H1661 and the wall H2346 of Jabneh, H2996 and the wall H2346 of Ashdod, H795 and built H1129 cities H5892 about Ashdod, H795 and among the Philistines. H6430
In those days H3117 also saw H7200 I Jews H3064 that had married H3427 wives H802 of Ashdod, H796 of Ammon, H5984 and of Moab: H4125 And their children H1121 spake H1696 half H2677 in the speech of Ashdod, H797 and could H5234 not speak H1696 in the Jews' language, H3066 but according to the language H3956 of each H5971 people. Commentary on Joshua 11 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 11
This chapter continues and concludes the history of the conquest of Canaan; of the reduction of the southern parts we had an account in the foregoing chapter, after which we may suppose Joshua allowed his forces some breathing-time; now here we have the story of the war in the north, and the happy success of that war.
Jos 11:1-9
We are here entering upon the story of another campaign that Joshua made, and it was a glorious one, no less illustrious than the former in the success of it, though in respect of miracles it was inferior to it in glory. The wonders God then wrought for them were to animate and encourage them to act vigorously themselves. Thus the war carried on by the preaching of the gospel against Satan's kingdom was at first forwarded by miracles; but, the war being by them sufficiently proved to be of God, the managers of it are now left to the ordinary assistance of divine grace in the use of the sword of the Spirit, and must not expect hail-stones nor the standing still of the sun. In this story we have,
Jos 11:10-14
We have here the same improvement made of this victory as was made of that in the foregoing chapter.
Jos 11:15-23
We have here the conclusion of this whole matter.
