13 Yet it came to pass, when the children H1121 of Israel H3478 were waxen strong, H2388 that they put H5414 the Canaanites H3669 to tribute; H4522 but did not utterly H3423 drive them out. H3423
And they drave not out H3423 the Canaanites H3669 that dwelt H3427 in Gezer: H1507 but the Canaanites H3669 dwell H3427 among H7130 the Ephraimites H669 unto this day, H3117 and serve H5647 under tribute. H4522
And it shall be, if it make thee answer H6030 of peace, H7965 and open H6605 unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people H5971 that is found H4672 therein shall be tributaries H4522 unto thee, and they shall serve H5647 thee. And if it will make no peace H7999 with thee, but will make H6213 war H4421 against thee, then thou shalt besiege H6696 it: And when the LORD H3068 thy God H430 hath delivered H5414 it into thine hands, H3027 thou shalt smite H5221 every male H2138 thereof with the edge H6310 of the sword: H2719 But the women, H802 and the little ones, H2945 and the cattle, H929 and all that is in the city, H5892 even all the spoil H7998 thereof, shalt thou take H962 unto thyself; and thou shalt eat H398 the spoil H7998 of thine enemies, H341 which the LORD H3068 thy God H430 hath given H5414 thee. Thus shalt thou do H6213 unto all the cities H5892 which are very H3966 far off H7350 from thee, which H2007 are not of the cities H5892 of these nations. H1471 But of the cities H5892 of these people, H5971 which the LORD H3068 thy God H430 doth give H5414 thee for an inheritance, H5159 thou shalt save alive H2421 nothing that breatheth: H5397 But thou shalt utterly H2763 destroy H2763 them; namely, the Hittites, H2850 and the Amorites, H567 the Canaanites, H3669 and the Perizzites, H6522 the Hivites, H2340 and the Jebusites; H2983 as the LORD H3068 thy God H430 hath commanded H6680 thee: That they teach H3925 you not to do H6213 after all their abominations, H8441 which they have done H6213 unto their gods; H430 so should ye sin H2398 against the LORD H3068 your God. H430
Neither did Zebulun H2074 drive out H3423 the inhabitants H3427 of Kitron, H7003 nor the inhabitants H3427 of Nahalol; H5096 but the Canaanites H3669 dwelt H3427 among H7130 them, and became tributaries. H4522
Neither did Naphtali H5321 drive out H3423 the inhabitants H3427 of Bethshemesh, H1053 nor the inhabitants H3427 of Bethanath; H1043 but he dwelt H3427 among H7130 the Canaanites, H3669 the inhabitants H3427 of the land: H776 nevertheless the inhabitants H3427 of Bethshemesh H1053 and of Bethanath H1043 became tributaries H4522 unto them.
Now there was long H752 war H4421 between the house H1004 of Saul H7586 and the house H1004 of David: H1732 but David H1732 waxed H1980 stronger H2390 and stronger, H2390 and the house H1004 of Saul H7586 waxed H1980 weaker H1800 and weaker. H1800
As for all the people H5971 that were left H3498 of the Hittites, H2850 and the Amorites, H567 and the Perizzites, H6522 and the Hivites, H2340 and the Jebusites, H2983 which were not of Israel, H3478 But of their children, H1121 who were left H3498 after H310 them in the land, H776 whom the children H1121 of Israel H3478 consumed H3615 not, them did Solomon H8010 make to pay H5927 tribute H4522 until this day. Commentary on Joshua 17 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 17
The half tribe of Manasseh comes next to be provided for; and here we have,
Jos 17:1-6
Manasseh was itself but one half of the tribe of Joseph, and yet was divided and subdivided.
Jos 17:7-13
We have here a short account of the lot of this half tribe. It reached from Jordan on the east to the great sea on the west; on the south it lay all along contiguous to Ephraim, but on the north it abutted upon Asher and Issachar. Asher lay north-west, and Issachar north-east, which seems to be the meaning of that (v. 10), that they (that is, Manasseh and Ephraim, as related to it, both together making the tribe of Joseph) met in Asher on the north and Issachar on the east, for Ephraim itself reached not those tribes. Some things are particularly observed concerning this lot:-
