12 Thus saith H559 the LORD; H3068 Though they be quiet, H8003 and likewise many, H7227 yet thus shall they be cut down, H1494 when he shall pass through. H5674 Though I have afflicted H6031 thee, I will afflict H6031 thee no more.
And his breath, H7307 as an overflowing H7857 stream, H5158 shall reach to the midst H2673 of the neck, H6677 to sift H5130 the nations H1471 with the sieve H5299 of vanity: H7723 and there shall be a bridle H7448 in the jaws H3895 of the people, H5971 causing them to err. H8582 Ye shall have a song, H7892 as in the night H3915 when a holy H6942 solemnity H2282 is kept; H6942 and gladness H8057 of heart, H3824 as when one goeth H1980 with a pipe H2485 to come H935 into the mountain H2022 of the LORD, H3068 to the mighty One H6697 of Israel. H3478 And the LORD H3068 shall cause his glorious H1935 voice H6963 to be heard, H8085 and shall shew H7200 the lighting down H5183 of his arm, H2220 with the indignation H2197 of his anger, H639 and with the flame H3851 of a devouring H398 fire, H784 with scattering, H5311 and tempest, H2230 and hailstones. H68 H1259 For through the voice H6963 of the LORD H3068 shall the Assyrian H804 be beaten down, H2865 which smote H5221 with a rod. H7626 And in every place H3605 where the grounded H4145 staff H4294 shall pass, H4569 which the LORD H3068 shall lay H5117 upon him, it shall be with tabrets H8596 and harps: H3658 and in battles H4421 of shaking H8573 will he fight H3898 with it. For Tophet H8613 is ordained H6186 of old; H865 yea, for the king H4428 it is prepared; H3559 he hath made it deep H6009 and large: H7337 the pile H4071 thereof is fire H784 and much H7235 wood; H6086 the breath H5397 of the LORD, H3068 like a stream H5158 of brimstone, H1614 doth kindle H1197 it.
They shall hunger G3983 no G3756 more, G2089 neither G3761 thirst G1372 any more; G2089 neither G3761 G3361 shall G4098 the sun G2246 light G4098 on G1909 them, G846 nor G3761 any G3956 heat. G2738
Behold upon the mountains H2022 the feet H7272 of him that bringeth good tidings, H1319 that publisheth H8085 peace! H7965 O Judah, H3063 keep H2287 thy solemn feasts, H2282 perform H7999 thy vows: H5088 for the wicked H1100 shall no more H3254 pass through H5674 thee; he is utterly cut off. H3772
Yea, the LORD H3068 will answer H6030 and say H559 unto his people, H5971 Behold, I will send H7971 you corn, H1715 and wine, H8492 and oil, H3323 and ye shall be satisfied H7646 therewith: and I will no more make H5414 you a reproach H2781 among the heathen: H1471
But his sons H1121 shall be stirred up, H1624 and shall assemble H622 a multitude H1995 of great H7227 forces: H2428 and one shall certainly H935 come, H935 and overflow, H7857 and pass through: H5674 then shall he return, H7725 and be stirred up, H1624 even to his fortress. H4581
Violence H2555 shall no more be heard H8085 in thy land, H776 wasting H7701 nor destruction H7667 within thy borders; H1366 but thou shalt call H7121 thy walls H2346 Salvation, H3444 and thy gates H8179 Praise. H8416 The sun H8121 shall be no more thy light H216 by day; H3119 neither for brightness H5051 shall the moon H3394 give light H216 unto thee: but the LORD H3068 shall be unto thee an everlasting H5769 light, H215 and thy God H430 thy glory. H8597 Thy sun H8121 shall no more go down; H935 neither shall thy moon H3391 withdraw H622 itself: for the LORD H3068 shall be thine everlasting H5769 light, H216 and the days H3117 of thy mourning H60 shall be ended. H7999
Thus saith H559 thy Lord H113 the LORD, H3068 and thy God H430 that pleadeth H7378 the cause of his people, H5971 Behold, I have taken out H3947 of thine hand H3027 the cup H3563 of trembling, H8653 even the dregs H6907 of the cup H3563 of my fury; H2534 thou shalt no more H3254 drink it again: H8354
Then the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 went forth, H3318 and smote H5221 in the camp H4264 of the Assyrians H804 a hundred H3967 and fourscore H8084 and five H2568 thousand: H505 and when they arose early H7925 in the morning, H1242 behold, they were all dead H4191 corpses. H6297
Then shall the Assyrian H804 fall H5307 with the sword, H2719 not of a mighty man; H376 and the sword, H2719 not of a mean man, H120 shall devour H398 him: but he shall flee H5127 from H6440 the sword, H2719 and his young men H970 shall be discomfited. H4522
For I will pass H5674 through the land H776 of Egypt H4714 this night, H3915 and will smite H5221 all the firstborn H1060 in the land H776 of Egypt, H4714 both man H120 and beast; H929 and against all the gods H430 of Egypt H4714 I will execute H6213 judgment: H8201 I am the LORD. H3068
And behold at eveningtide H6256 H6153 trouble; H1091 and before the morning H1242 he is not. This is the portion H2506 of them that spoil H8154 us, and the lot H1486 of them that rob H962 us.
The LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 hath sworn, H7650 saying, H559 Surely as I have thought, H1819 so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, H3289 so shall it stand: H6965 That I will break H7665 the Assyrian H804 in my land, H776 and upon my mountains H2022 tread him under foot: H947 then shall his yoke H5923 depart H5493 from off them, and his burden H5448 depart H5493 from off their shoulders. H7926 This is the purpose H6098 that is purposed H3289 upon the whole earth: H776 and this is the hand H3027 that is stretched out H5186 upon all the nations. H1471 For the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 hath purposed, H3289 and who shall disannul H6565 it? and his hand H3027 is stretched out, H5186 and who shall turn it back? H7725
As yet shall he remain H5975 at Nob H5011 that day: H3117 he shall shake H5130 his hand H3027 against the mount H2022 of the daughter H1323 H1004 of Zion, H6726 the hill H1389 of Jerusalem. H3389 Behold, the Lord, H113 the LORD H3068 of hosts, H6635 shall lop H5586 the bough H6288 with terror: H4637 and the high ones H7311 of stature H6967 shall be hewn down, H1438 and the haughty H1364 shall be humbled. H8213 And he shall cut down H5362 the thickets H5442 of the forest H3293 with iron, H1270 and Lebanon H3844 shall fall H5307 by a mighty one. H117
And he shall pass H2498 through Judah; H3063 he shall overflow H7857 and go over, H5674 he shall reach H5060 even to the neck; H6677 and the stretching out H4298 of his wings H3671 shall fill H4393 the breadth H7341 of thy land, H776 O Immanuel. H6005 H410
In the same day H3117 shall the Lord H136 shave H1548 with a razor H8593 that is hired, H7917 namely, by them beyond H5676 the river, H5104 by the king H4428 of Assyria, H804 the head, H7218 and the hair H8181 of the feet: H7272 and it shall also consume H5595 the beard. H2206
And it came to pass, as he was worshipping H7812 in the house H1004 of Nisroch H5268 his god, H430 that Adrammelech H152 and Sharezer H8272 his sons H1121 smote H5221 him with the sword: H2719 and they escaped H4422 into the land H776 of Armenia. H780 And Esarhaddon H634 his son H1121 reigned H4427 in his stead.
And it came to pass that night, H3915 that the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 went out, H3318 and smote H5221 in the camp H4264 of the Assyrians H804 an hundred H3967 fourscore H8084 and five H2568 thousand: H505 and when they arose early H7925 in the morning, H1242 behold, they were all dead H4191 corpses. Commentary on Nahum 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
An Exposition, With Practical Observations, of
The Prophecy of Nahum
Chapter 1
In this chapter we have,
Nah 1:1
This title directs us to consider,
Nah 1:2-8
Nineveh knows not God, that God that contends with her, and therefore is here told what a God he is; and it is good for us all to mix faith with that which is here said concerning him, which speaks a great deal of terror to the wicked and comfort to good people; for this glorious description of the Sovereign of the world, like the pillar of cloud and fire, has a bright side towards Israel and a dark side towards the Egyptians. Let each take his portion from it; let sinners read it and tremble; let saints read it and triumph. The wrath of God is here revealed from heaven against his enemies, his favour and mercy are here assured to his faithful loyal subjects, and his almighty power in both, making his wrath very terrible and his favour very desirable.
Nah 1:9-15
These verses seem to point at the destruction of the army of the Assyrians under Sennacherib, which may well be reckoned a part of the burden of Nineveh, the head city of the Assyrian empire, and a pledge of the destruction of Nineveh itself about 100 years after; and this was an event which Isaiah, with whom probably this prophet was contemporary, spoke much of. Now observe here,
