5 Beloved, faithfully dost thou do whatever thou mayest work to the brethren and to the strangers,
`Who, then, is the servant, faithful and wise, whom his lord did set over his household, to give them the nourishment in season?
And the Lord said, `Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the lord shall set over his household, to give in season the wheat measure?
`He who is faithful in the least, `is' also faithful in much; and he who in the least `is' unrighteous, is also unrighteous in much; if, then, in the unrighteous mammon ye became not faithful -- the true who will entrust to you? and if in the other's ye became not faithful -- your own, who shall give to you?
Because of this, having this ministration, according as we did receive kindness, we do not faint, but did renounce for ourselves the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness, nor deceitfully using the word of God, but by the manifestation of the truth recommending ourselves unto every conscience of men, before God; and if also our good news is vailed, in those perishing it is vailed,
therefore, then, as we have opportunity, may we work the good to all, and especially unto those of the household of the faith.
each, according as he received a gift, to one another ministering it, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God; if any one doth speak -- `as oracles of God;' if any one doth minister -- `as of the ability which God doth supply;' that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom is the glory and the power -- to the ages of the ages. Amen.

Commentary on 3 John 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
An Exposition, With Practical Observations, of
The Third Epistle of John
Chapter 1
In this epistle the apostle congratulates Gaius upon the prosperity of his soul (v. 1, 2), upon the fame he had among good Christians (v. 3, 4), and upon his charity and hospitality to the servants of Christ (v. 5, 6). He complains of contemptuous treatment by an ambitious Diotrephes (v. 9, 10), recommends Demetrius (v. 12), and expresses his hope of visiting Gaius shortly (v. 13, 14).
